Green Infrastructure (GI) is a strategically planned and delivered network of high quality green spaces and other environmental features. A GI approach seeks to deliver a multifunctional resource capable of delivering a wide range of environmental and quality of life benefits for local communities, linking with ecosystem services.
GI includes a wide range of resources including more traditional greenspaces such as parks and playing fields, as well as woodlands, street trees, allotments, private gardens, green roofs and walls, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and soils. It includes rivers, streams, canals and other water bodies.
GI can provide many social, economic and environmental benefits including places for outdoor relaxation and play, habitats for wildlife with access to nature for people, climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental education, local food production and improved health and well-being. Associated ecosystem services delivered by GI can include pollination, air purification and flood alleviation.
Lepus has experience of developing a range of GI strategies to meet the needs of our clients, including, sub-regional strategic GI initiatives, GI strategies to accompany Local Plans and strategies to deliver environmental enhancement and ecosystem services within designated landscapes.
