Green Infrastructure Study to provide evidence for the Havant Borough Council Allocations Document.

Havant Borough Council commissioned a Green Infrastructure Study to provide evidence for the Allocations Document.  The study built on the adopted Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) sub-regional Green Infrastructure Strategy and analysed the provision and need for GI at the Havant local level.

Green infrastructure (GI) planning is an important means of ensuring that the benefits that GI assets provide are recognised as key features. The long term planning and management of GI assets is crucial for a strong high quality green infrastructure network; development of a green infrastructure strategy serves to strengthen the mechanisms and relationships necessary to achieve this.

The GI work for Havant Council studied existing GI provision in the borough, assessed need and provided a suite of recommendations to address deficiencies at the sub-borough level. The study reviewed the policy framework within which GI can be delivered and set out the means by which delivery could be achieved.

The study focused on identifying a framework to guide the protection, enhancement, restoration and re-creation of GI in the borough. The Framework was designed following analysis of existing GI provision and patterns, existing policy directions and a thorough understanding of the benefits the borough could derive from an integrated, multifunctional GI network. The Framework was based on four key themes and 14 objectives. Together the themes and objectives are designed to shape GI projects and delivery at a borough and sub-borough scale, largely focusing on settlements. Recommendations were developed specifically for each area in order to strengthen local GI networks.

The Study is targeted at planning policy makers, development control planners, the community, developers, and land managers. The purpose of the Study, in addition to providing evidence for the Allocations Document, is to enable engagement with local communities and help to facilitate sustainable development.
